Thanks to CUPE members in solid waste, Ontarians benefit from high-quality waste management service at the lowest cost.

But the province’s plan to overhaul Ontario’s blue bin program could be a recipe for expanded privatization and a horrible loss of public oversight over important waste diversion services.

The new blue bin program shifts the costs and planning of waste diversion from municipalities to waste producers (private companies) who have a vested interest in finding ways to cut costs and save money—often at the expense of service delivery, waste diversion rates, and good, stable jobs.

Together, we can ensure a green future for our province. Public oversight over waste management and the protection of good jobs is vital to ensuring that we can do our part for a greener tomorrow.
